Rotherham residents take pride with community clean-up
Community-minded residents and council staff joined forces to give their neighbourhoods a good clean-up last week as part of a wider scheme urging people to take pride in where they live.
As part of Rotherham Council’s Love Where You Live campaign, a community skip was provided on Scarsdale Street in Dinnington and Rotherham Council staff helped remove fly tipping and graffiti as well as street cleaning.
Residents turned out in force to help litter pick and a large amount of rubbish was cleared from the area thanks to everyone’s efforts.
Meanwhile in Swinton, local people joined their three ward councillors, Ken Wyatt, Stuart Sansome and Victoria Cusworth, for a litter pick and community skip day on the St John’s Estate. They also cleaned litter from some well-used country footpaths in the area.
Councillor Ken Wyatt said: “Swinton ward councillors have been committed to carry out a monthly clean up sessions at various locations in the ward for quite some time. We have some dedicated volunteers who come out with us on most occasions but it’s also great to be joined by local residents who just want to help out in their own neighbourhood. We can’t always get a large skip funded but even spending some time with litter pickers and bags it is amazing how much rubbish can be collected.”
Steve Lavin, of the Rother Valley South Area Assembly team, said: “The appearance of the area is much improved following the clean-up and the challenge now is for the residents to maintain this. I would encourage any resident who is interested in getting involved in doing this to contact us on 01909 568515 or call into our office at Dinnington Resource Centre.”
Coun Emma Hoddinott, Rotherham Council’s cabinet member for waste, roads and community safety, said: “I’m really pleased that more and more local communities in Rotherham are getting involved and helping keep their area looking great. We’d love to hear from anyone who wants to get involved – just get in touch with us and we’ll provide all the necessary equipment.”
