These horrific injuries were suffered by a hero mum as she was savaged by a dog while rescuing her young son.
Maria Arouq had her clothes ripped to shreds by the bull mastiff and was covered in blood before she was pulled to safety by a neighbour.
The mother-of-three suffered eight severe wounds – which have left her scarred for life – and needed 11 stitches in the ‘nightmare’ attack as she tried to protect her six-year-old son.
South Yorkshire Police said the dog has now been destroyed.
Maria was inside her house on Burns Road, Herringthorpe, Rotherham, while her son Jacob played on his scooter outside with pal Dylan Whatley, 10.
The 36-year-old heard him screaming, ran outside and discovered the dog had him cornered by the fence and had bitten his leg.
She ran to protect her son and told the children to run to the house as the dog turned on her.
She said: “It knocked me into a bush. I started running and fell flat on my face.”
I was grabbing its nose to keep it from biting me but it was just ragging me.
“I thought ‘it isn’t having my kids’. It was a nightmare.”
Luckily, quick-thinking neighbour Christian Wilde was passing in his car and mounted the pavement alongside Maria, clipping the dog with his vehicle before grabbing hold of her and pulling her into the back so she could escape.
She said: “If I hadn’t been for him I don’t know what would have happened.”
Christian said today: “I saw the dog clinging onto her. The dog was drooling blood, honestly it was awful. I can’t imagine what she is going through. I really feel for this woman. She had massive wounds, the dog bit big chunks out of her.
“I’m a first aider and I’ve seen a few things but this is going to stick with me. I honestly don’t think she’d be here if I hadn’t seen her.”
The 37-year-old engineer managed to shut the dog in Maria’s garden and call the emergency services.
He said: “She is a hero. She had come out to protect her kids. She had the fight of her life. She’s a really brave woman. I wouldn’t want to tackle that dog.
“I wish I’d just run it over.
“I hope they prosecute the owners. Any dog can be a nice dog, it is down to them. I think it’s disgusting.
“I can’t believe this kind of animal is just walking around. Imagine what it could have done to a kid, they’d be lucky to survive.
“It’s not something you think would happen around here.”
Maria was so traumatised by the attack she can no longer have her mother’s dogs in the house.
“They are family dogs but I don’t want them near me.
“I’ve never really been bothered by animals but it has changed me with dogs.
“It was very painful, I’m hoping not to have to have surgery.”
