Rotherham abuse trial: Gang ‘held girl, 14, hostage and made her have sex in exchange for heroin’

A jury at Sheffield Crown Court was told the girl, who was around 14 years old, was once caught trying to escape by two women involved in the gang and beaten by them.

The complainant, who is now 36, gave evidence at the trial of Arshid Hussain, Qurban Ali, Basharat Hussain, Sajid Bostan, Majid Bostan, Karen MacGregor and Shelley Davies, who all deny being involved in child sexual exploitation offences in Rotherham.

The court heard the girl was around 11 years old when she began to suffer sustained sexual and physical abuse at the hands of Arshid Hussain and others for almost a decade. It is alleged the girl, who had lived in several children’s homes, started living in the home of Karen MacGregor when she was 14 years old.

She said she was made to have sex with Asian men – some from Sheffield – on a daily basis and was kept locked in the property.

The woman said she had attempted to leave the Rotherham property at night by climbing through a window – but was seen by Shelley Davies, who pulled her back inside.

She said: “Shelley pulled me back in and ended up beating me up. Karen came down and ended up hitting me as well. They were shouting at me, telling me that I owed them and had to do what they wanted me to do.”

She said she was first given heroin by Arshid Hussain at the home of a man named ‘Ken’, but she didn’t know what she was taking.

The woman said: “I can remember for the rest of the night being out of it.”

The complainant told the court she was then made to have sex with Hussain’s brother ‘Bono’, followed by Hussain and then immediately after by Sajid Bostan. She said that when living at MacGregor’s house, she was made to have sex with ‘six or seven’ different men and was given heroin in return.

When asked about her state of mind at the time, she said: “I was just a mess and all over the place, just wanting someone to look after me.”

The court was told the 14-year-old girl was made to have sex with MacGregor’s then-boyfriend, a man named ‘Blind Ash’, who the prosecution say is defendant Qurban Ali.

The woman also alleged that she was made to perform sex acts on Sajid and Majid Bostan on the tennis courts at Clifton Park when she was around 15 years old.
