Rotherham abuse trial: Basharat Hussain '˜kidnapped witness and held him at teenage girl's flat'

Sheffield Crown Court heard Basharat Hussain was sent to prison for kidnap as a result of the incident involving one of the 12 complainants in the trial.

In a video interview played to the jury, the now 31-year-old woman said she had been around 18 when Hussain brought the kidnapped man to her property.

The woman had earlier told the court she had been in an abusive two-year relationship with Hussain and he had once smashed her head into a pub window, resulting in her being taken to hospital.

She said of the kidnap incident: “He were telling me this man was due in court against his brother and he needed to get rid of him for a bit so he couldn’t attend court.

“Obviously I couldn’t really say no.

“He kept him at mine for a bit. When he did let him go, the police came to me.”

The woman gave a statement to police and said she later received threatening phone calls from prison from Hussain.

“He rang me once or twice saying it was my fault he were inside and I should watch my back,” she said.

The woman said she had first become involved with Basharat Hussain’s brother and co-defendant Arshid Hussain when she was 15 years old.

She said Arshid Hussain started having sex with her within a few days of them meeting.

The woman said he was ‘nice at first’ but was a ‘Jekyll and Hyde character’.

She said on one occasion, he had told her to get into a car with four Asian men, who had taken her to a house she thought was in Sheffield.

The woman said the house was ‘full of Asian men’, some of whom tried to touch her.

She told the court she was kept at the property for around two-and-half hours and had been ‘really scared’.

She said her contact with Arshid Hussain ended when he went to prison and she met Basharat Hussain when his brother asked him to get her to smuggle drugs into jail for him.

The woman said after meeting her, Basharat said she wouldn’t have to deliver the drugs and started a sexual relationship with her.

She said Basharat Hussain would subject her to physical and verbal abuse, calling her ‘white trash’ and ‘damaged goods’.

The woman said he once smashed her head into a pub window when she was 17 and she was taken to hospital by ambulance.

She said he waited for her outside hospital and persuaded her not to make a statement to police.

“I didn’t want another hiding,” she said.
