A total of £529,000 was spent on defending brothers Arshid and Basharat Hussain along with their co-defendants during a two-month trial at Sheffield Crown Court.

Some members of the gang are currently fighting to appeal their convictions after five out of six of them were jailed for a combined 102 years.

Details of the legal aid payouts have been revealed in a Freedom of Information request.

Legal aid for ringleader Arshid Hussain, originally from Rotherham, who was jailed for 35 years in February, was £150,000 alone.

Four members of the gang – Arshid and Basharat Hussain, along with their uncle Qurban Ali and fellow defendant Karen MacGregor – are hoping to get their convictions overturned at the Court of Appeal.
