Rockers hit big time at festival

ROCKERS the Wallbirds are to hit the stage at the world famous Leeds festival next weekend - just eight months after they played their very first gig in a Doncaster bar

The roots rockers' career has really taken off since last December when they made their debut at the Priory in Lazarus Court.

They are signed to trendy Leeds-based label Dance to the Radio, are due to release their debut single in October and have played a host of live dates throughout the UK, including appearances on festival bills alongside the likes of Martha Wainwright and the Magic Numbers.

The band have also recorded a Janice Long session which was broadcast on BBC Radio Two.

"We had dinner with Martha Wainwright at the Belladrum Festival, which was a bit surreal," said guitarist and singer Ant Lindley, from Scawsby, who at 23 is the oldest member of the band.

"Hanging out with the Numbers was very cool too.

"It's amazing to think that when we played the Priory gig we'd only written some of the songs that afternoon. That's how raw we were.

"I guess we have come a long way in a relatively short space of time, but we haven't had time to think about it.

"It's just all happened and we've gone with the flow."

The band could soon be back in Doncaster supporting labelmates and music press faves the Pigeon Detectives, at Doncaster Dome.

"That should be happening later in the year," Ant said.

"It's not confirmed yet but it would be great.

"We haven't played Doncaster as much as we should have, which is a shame. We just didn't want to be one of those bands who played the same venue week after week.

"It's a big deal to be playing Doncaster. It's our home town and it would be a real thrill."
