Robbers armed with gun and hammer threatened staff in Barnsley bookmakers

Men armed with a gun and a hammer threatened staff during a robbery of a bookmakers in Barnsley.

The pair, who had their faces covered during the raid, struck at Betfred in Worsbrough Common between 7.55pm and 8.05pm on Saturday, February 20 as a member of staff was leaving.

He was forced back into the shop by the robbers who threatened him and a colleague.

The robbers stole cash and mobile phones from the shop.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Officers are appealing for information following reports of an armed robbery at a bookmakers in the Worsbrough Common area of Barnsley.

“Sometime between 7.55-8.05pm on Saturday, February 20, it is reported that a member of staff was leaving the shop when he was forced back inside the building by two men unknown to him.

“Once inside, the two men, who are believed to have had their faces covered, are said to have threatened the man and another member of staff.

“It is believed that the men were in possession of a handgun and a hammer.

“No one was injured during the incident but the two members of staff were understandably left shaken by the incident.

“The two men stole a quantity of cash and a number of mobile phones from the shop.

“Detectives investigating the matter are asking anyone who was in the area around the time of the incident to contact police.

“Did you see anyone acting suspiciously in the area?”
