Road to close to allow bus corridor work

WORK on Doncaster's Quality Bus Corridor scheme will move up a gear tonight as the next phase of work at the junction of Bawtry Road and Cantley Lane starts.

The QBC includes improvements to the road network along the A638 and the current stage is being developed on Bawtry Road to introduce the southern section.

The work this weekend will see the outbound lane of Cantley Lane at its junction with Bawtry Road closed for 24 hours from 7pm this evening until 7pm tomorrow for resurfacing.

A temporary traffic diversion, which will be signposted, will be in place to direct traffic along Bawtry Road turning left into Church Lane and along Goodison Boulevard to Cantley Lane.

Residents living on the route will have access to their homes at all times, says Doncaster Council.

Peter Dale, the council’s strategic director for development, said: “We appreciate that roadworks do tend to make journeys longer and we are trying to keep disruption to a minimum. I would like to apologise in advance of the works starting to motorists who might experience delays.”

The A638 QBC project is a partnership between South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, Doncaster Council and the local bus operators in Doncaster.

It extends both north and south of Doncaster town centre, along York Road, from Green Lane to the North Bridge, and in the south along Bawtry Road from Racecourse Roundabout to Parrots Corner.

In December 2006 the Department for Transport agreed to provide 15.3 million for the infrastructure works and local bus operators will be making an investment in their bus fleets.

Construction work has now started on three of the five phases and is due to start on the fourth phase later this year.

The scheme is scheduled to be completed in 2008.
