The Labour leader, who said he would have sacked Cummings had he found himself in the same position as Johnson, claimed the government looked ‘untrustworthy’ and ‘unprincipled’ after defending the PM’s top aide following his lockdown trips.

A Daily Mail poll this week saw Starmer’s popularity soar by 7 points and BoyleSports now have the former human rights lawyer as favourite to become the next Prime Minister. He closed into 6/4 from 2/1 this week to win the next election having been a 4/1 shot when he was confirmed as Jeremy Corbyn’s successor.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak has seen his stock rise during the coronavirus crisis and the MP for Richmond is the most likely Tory to replace Johnson as PM as the 4/1 second favourite.

Leon Blanche, spokesperson for BoyleSports said: “It seems that Keir Starmer has made a bright start in the Labour hotseat and punters are now backing in him as PM material in significant numbers. Support this week has taken off and we are now a short 6/4 from 5/2 about him leading Labour into Number 10.”
