MORE people than ever before are seeking legal help for debt problems in Barnsley.

The number of people wanting advice and help has risen by almost 40 per cent - the biggest increase in the region.

Figures released by the Legal Services Commission which administers the legal aid scheme reveal that in 2006 to 2007 there were 368 requests for legal help in sorting out debt, compared to 267 the previous year. During 2006 the Commission spent more than 3 million providing free legal services for people in the borough.
