A RING of steel has gone up around Sheffield City Hall for the Lib Dem conference which starts on Friday.

In a bid to keep party delegates safe at the three-day spring summit, mobile fencing has been erected around the venue in Barker’s Pool to keep protesters out.

It is thought thousands of demonstrators could come to Sheffield to protest at Liberal Democrat policies and coalition with the Conservatives.

The Spring Conference is the party’s first mass gathering since leader and Sheffield Hallam MP Nick Clegg agreed to join forces with the Tories at the General Electiont.

The Lib Dems’ U-turn on student tuition fees sparked violent protests last year when MPs voted for university fees to increase.

In a bid to avoid a repeat of the ugly scenes at demonstrations in London, Sheffield-based firm Betafence has provided fencing which has already been used to keep people safe at events at the G8 summit in Italy.
