Review: Spoon up a homemade breakfast at cosy cafe

If someone said they were going to Spoons in my town they would be heading to a budget drink and food chain. But in Woodseats they would be referring to the well established Spoon Cafe Bistro on Abbey Lane. This popular cafe is licensed and staff are proud to specialise in homemade food.

From their own ketchup recipes to plentiful desserts, everything is done in-house.

Their outdoor seating welcomed me on a warm Sunday lunchtime – but I was enticed indoors by the smell of their all-day breakfasts.

There are extensive menu choices of wraps, jacket potatoes, burgers and steaks and ‘Bit more than a sandwich’ that can be served with hand cut chips. There are plenty of vegetarian and gluten free options too but I really needed to have the vegetarian breakfast to try their ‘famous’ homemade sausages which apparently even the carnivores often opt for.

The sausages are served with eggs, potato cake, mushrooms, beans, grilled tomato and doorstep toast, along with a brew of fine coffee for £6.

The portion was plentiful and I envy anyone who could manage to go large for an extra couple of quid.

The food did not rest heavy but it hit the spot nonetheless.

My friend had the sausage butty from the ‘Build a butty’ section with extra egg.

He opted for the melt-in-the-mouth scrambled egg which came on the doorstep slice of toast.

I was almost envious of his choice but my golden fried egg yolk, with toast dipped in, was a treat.

The sausages were amazing, with a great consistency and full of flavour.

With a little room left for dessert there were none on show to tempt me, just a sign saying they were available. I had to request the list which was bought over and opted for the butterscotch brownie, a gluten-free option and surprisingly moist. It had a nutty crunch with a sweet syrup drizzled on the top.

The friendly nature and efficiency of the staff was great to say it was a busy lunchtime, with a constant stream of customers.

The cafe had a buzz about it and despite the paint-chipped walls and cup-stained tables it had a cosy feel, and it was certainly clean and tidy.

There was minimal decor, with spoon-themed trinkets and pictures on the walls, as well as the obligatory bottle of Henderson’s Relish on each table.

This place is a gem - it has a great coffee selection, bistro evenings, an excellent menu and fabulous prices.

Our total bill came to £16.75, including drinks.
