Review: Gaslight, Sheffield Lyceum, runs until Saturday

One thing I wasn't expecting to do while watching a psychological thriller was to laugh.

Each time tension started to build it was broken by laughter, so the suspense never gripped.

In the story, Jack Manningham (Rupert Young) is trying to convince his wife she is going mad.

Young showed real menace on occasion as he taunted and mocked the tormented Bella (Kara Tointon).

Tointon looked suitably browbeaten and affected an RP accent which reminded me of Audrey Hepburn.

She is brought to her senses by Detective Rough (Keith Allen), who has been trying to solve a murder.

He brings out the story to the marriage as he questions Bella, a slightly laboured ploy lightened by Allen’s comedic touch.
