RETRO: Sheffield's beauty pageants of days gone by

Aforgotten, sexist relic of a bygone era, or a bit of harmless fun for all ages?

Whatever you make of beauty pageants – which continue to this day – their popularity has continued through the decades, as these photographs attest.

The majority of these photos were taken in the 1970s and 1980s for the Miss Yorkshire TV beauty contest.

It would seem that each local newspaper had its own entrant – in one 1985 photo, Miss Sheffield Star, Miss Doncaster Star and Miss Worksop Guardian battled others in the region for the title.

Miss Sheffield Star was Yvette Clarke from Handsworth, but Worksop’s Ashlie Dickens won that year.

Other photos include Tracy Dixon, then 19, from Grimesthorpe and Carol Stuart from Mosborough, along with Wendy Bell, when the 1983 heat was held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in Sheffield.

The winner of Miss YTV 1983 won £750 cash, a £40-a-month dress allowance and free use of a car.

Also pictured here is Jacquie Stocks, who was Miss Sheffield Wednesday in 1985.

Was there also a Miss Sheffield United? It’s not entirely clear.
