RETRO PICTURES: Two centuries of Bakewell Show

It's almost 200 years since 12 landowners and farmers met at the Angel Inn pub in Chesterfield to discuss the state of British agriculture after the Napoleonic Wars.

They agreed to hold an event to promote local farming and the seeds of Bakewell Show – one of the oldest agricultural attractions in Britain – were sown.

That first event was held at the Angel Inn on July 5, 1819.

Today things have grown beyond all recognition and the show, known affectionately as Little Royal, goes from strength to strength.

This year’s Bakewell Show will take place next Wednesday and Thursday. For more information www.bakewellshow.org
