Retro: The day Sheffield Wednesday said '˜Thanks, but no thanks' to Big Ron Atkinson

Twenty years ago today, Ron Atkinson, having kept Sheffield Wednesday in the Premiership, left the club for the second time after they announced their intention to appoint a full-time manager.

Big Ron had returned to the club on a short term contract in November 1997 after the Owls had lost 6-1 to Manchester United, a result which saw the sacking of David Pleat.

The team, which included the likes of Paolo Di Canio, Benito Carbone, Des Walker and Kevin Pressman finished in 16th spot in 1998.

Atkinson thought he’d done enough to keep hold of the Hillsborough hot seat - but he was to be disavowed of that thought, his contract was not to be renewed and Danny Wilson took over the reins.

Wilson lasted just shy of two years.
