RETRO: The day gales slammed Sheffield

But cast your minds back to 1982 when gales battered Sheffield.

High winds smashed through the city and South Yorkshire, leading to felled trees and a lot of wrecked vehicles.

On December 15, 1982, a car crashed into a tree that had blown over in Tibshelf, as pictured in The Star at the time.

As an aside, it’s also interesting to note how low-rent the police car is - a dirty, barely liveried Austin Metro that wasn’t going to win many high-speed chases – and this was only 34 years back.

Also pictured here: a van being righted after being flipped over by winds in Barnsley , and an advertising hoarding that was blown on to a car.

Another van was in the wars in 1976, right, when it was hit by part of a roof which blew off in John Street, near Bramall Lane.

For those thinking ‘Michael Fish’, these photos were before his time - the famed BBC weather presenter who missed a hurricane didn’t commit his blunder until 1987.

The 1982 gales came just 20 years after the ‘killer hurricane’ (as our sister paper wrote) of 1962, in which three died and 100,000 homes were damaged in a single night by gales of up to 100mph.
