RETRO: Changing face of Pitsmoor

In the first of a series of Midweek Retro articles, we'll be turning attention to various Sheffield estates and suburbs in turn to see how they looked in the not-too-distant past.

First up is Pitsmoor.

This series of photos was mostly taken in the 1980s, with one of them - the Pitsmoor Toll Bar House, taken in 1973.

The former village apparently derives its name from ‘Ore pits’, because the area originally was known for mining ore.

One of Pitsmoor’s biggest claims to fame is a gig by guitar legend Jimi Hendrix at a club owned by the family of Peter Stringfellow.

The King Mojo Club, later renamed the Beautiful Mojo Club, could be found on Pitsmoor Road for a brief period between 1964 and 1967, and it is during this time that Jimi Hendrix, The Who and Pink Floyd all played live gigs in Pitsmoor.

Many of these photos show the area surrounding Spital Hill, taken between 1981 and 1983.

Pitsmoor Toll Bar House was located at the corner of Barnsley Road, Burngreave Road and Pitsmoor Road, and the site levied tolls until 1876.

This photo was taken on November 2, 1976 for a feature about 100 years passing since its last toll levy.
