RETRO: 10 Bygone Sheffield pubs of the 1980s and 1990s

But whereas our Retro pullout on a Saturday focuses on the pubs of many decades -or even centuries - ago, we cast our eye not quite so far back: to the bygone watering holes of the 1980s and 1990s in Sheffield.

While there are plenty of pubs still trading and doing well from that era there are many which have sadly long since served their last pint, moved, or been taken over and renamed..

The Raven Hotel is one such pub.

There are census records which indicate the pub was trading in 1841, but it could have been open for some time before that.

Pictured here in August 1980, the Fitzwilliam Street boozer underwent a renovation at the time.

As The Star reporterd: “The inside has been demolished, and it is to be completely renovated in ‘nautical’ fashion as the name will be changed to ‘Hornblower’.

This nautical theme meant the inside was decked out like an old ship. It was, in fact, said to be furnished in the style of Napoleonic war officer Horatio Hornblower.

Years later, the pub became O’Hagans before being demolished apparently as part of the West One development.

The Barrow Boys, pictured here in January 1987, was located under a bridge, and had just one door and no windows.

It takes its name from a local term for a market trader whose job it was to move fruit and vegetables in the market on a wheelbarrow. Today, all that remains is a bricked-up entrance in an unassuming spot close to Ponds Forge leisure centre.

Barrow House Hotel in Wincobank, pictured in March 1995, was said to be haunted.

A chap called Shaun Gillot, pictured above, allegedly took a photo of a ghost at the bar of the hotel on the corner of Fife Street and Ecclesfield Road.

In the 1980s, it was called the Dallas Bar, after being known as the Engineer’s Hotel. It has since been demolished.

The Firth Park Hotel, pictured above in February 1995, was closed as recently as 2008.

The pub has now become home to the Pakistan Community Association.

The Lambpool in Jansen Street, Attercliffe, and The Orchard in Orchard Square, Sheffield city centre, are also no longer around in their current guises.

The same goes for The Golden Ball, also in Attercliffe, and Fox House in Darnall.
