Restaurant evacuated after fan fire

FIRE crews were called to a Doncaster town centre restaurant last night after diners had to be evacuated.

The extractor fan at the Istanbul in Bowers Fold went up in flames just before 10.30pm and 38-year-old restaurant owner Erdal Palat used fire extinguishers to try and put the blaze out.

But the fire spread to pipework and it was extinguished by Doncaster firefighters, who also gave Mr Palat oxygen before he was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation.

Grease on the extractor unit is thought to have been ignite. About eight Istanbul customers were evacuated.

It was one of two incidents which saw people treated for the effects of smoke.

The other involved a man of 83 whose semi-detached house in Granby Crescent, Bennetthorpe, was reported on fire on Saturday afternoon.
