Residents win fight against industrial plan

RESIDENTS have won their campaign to prevent three large industrial units being built on Wentworth Industrial Park.

More than 100 letters objecting to the plans were sent to Barnsley Council and Tank-ersley Parish Council and individual Barnsley councillors also opposed the application.

Gladman Homes Ltd and Diamler Chrysler UK Ltd Erection wanted permission for three industrial units with two-three storey office accommodation, service yards and car parking and said the site would operate 24 hours a day.

Officials said the development represented an investment of between 35million to 40million and could produce 300 jobs.

But villagers in Tankersley and Pilley objected and residents on Carr Lane and the Stone Leigh and Stone Row Court estate said the 18 metre-high units would create noise and disturbance and were so big they would have an “overbearing appearance”.

Officers said: “The proposed units are very large and of uninspiring external appearance in terms of design and this is not considered acceptable given the location of these buildings along the northern edge of the estate and the prominence these buildings would have on the landscape.”

The report added: “However the proposed development, by virtue of height, scale, bulk and layout, if approved, would result in significant harm to the landscape generally and in particular, the visual amenities of the green belt and an area of borough landscape value.

“The proposal would also be likely to lead to a substantial loss of amenity at some nearby residential properties.”

The planning application was rejected.
