Residents report 'strong smell' in Sheffield as oil spews into River Don

An investigation is underway following an ‘oil spill’ in a Sheffield river.

The oil slick diesel spill is affecting a six kilometre stretch of the River Don, downstream from Lady’s Bridge, today (Wednesday, January 15) with residents reporting a ‘strong smell’ when driving and walking nearby.

The Environment Agency is working to establish the source of the spill after concerns were raised over pollution and local wildlife.

A spokesperson for the Environment Agency Yorkshire and North East said: “An investigation is underway following reports of a film of oil affecting a six kilometre stretch of the River Don downstream of Lady’s Bridge in Sheffield.

“Environment Officers are working to identify the source of the oil, prevent any further pollution and manage any potential environmental impact.”
