Residents rent their driveways to shoppers

Sheffield homeowners have been making up to £350 each by charging Christmas shoppers to park in their driveways - according to new figures from JustPark.

As the manic Christmas shopping season draws to a close this week, it’s been revealed that Sheffield residents have been turning to the JustPark website to cash in on the festive rush - with the city’s homeowners making over £10,000 renting out their driveways and car parking spaces.
Sheffield is in the top 25 most expensive UK cities for public car parking - at an average of £12.10 per day. This year, an increasing number of local shoppers chose to pre-book a private parking space, and guarantee themselves a spot, rather than pay the city’s higher public parking rates.

Residents are charging drivers an average of £6.30 per day to park in their spare spaces, but those living closer to the city centre are making considerably more, with some shoppers willing to pay up to £20 to avoid car park queues and secure a conveniently located space.

JustPark founder, Anthony Eskinazi, said: “With public parking adding a significant cost to the Christmas shopping bill - and spaces especially hard to find at this busy time of year - it’s no surprise that drivers are looking for cheaper and more convenient alternatives.

“This year we’ve seen our pre-bookings for private driveway climb by 50 per cent on last year. By allowing Christmas shoppers to pre-book parking in a private driveway, usually at a much reduced rate, JustPark is saving these drivers time and money - and putting money back into the pockets of local residents.”

The website expects demand for these cut-price parking spaces to continue to rise in the next few days, as shoppers scramble to get all their presents bought before the big day.
