Residents begin fight to prevent rugby club plan

RESIDENTS fighting plans by Rotherham Rugby Club to fence off part of Herringthorpe Park and install floodlights have officially launched their ‘Hands off Herringthorpe’ campaign.

The rugby club has secured planning permission after appealing against rejection of the proposals by Rotherham Council.

The club has now applied for a 22-year lease of the playing fields from the council.

Members of the new campaign group gathered in the park for a demonstration.

A spokeswoman for Herringthorpe Playing Fields Community Group said: “Rugby and football have taken place on the fields for many years, without the need for fencing and 20-ft floodlights.

“Our aim is to retain the playing fields as an open space for recreational activities for people of all ages.”
