Residents affected by a major blaze at a recycling centre in Rotherham have returned home.

They were advised to move out of their homes because of the amount of smoke generated by a fire at Universal Recycling, Wharf Road, Kilnhurst, which broke out on Monday morning.

Plumes of thick black smoke could be seen for miles across Rotherham and Doncaster at the height of the blaze.

The smoke was still an issue most of yesterday but started to clear last night.

Around 500 tonnes of baled plastic went up in flames at the recycling centre.

Metal and aerosol cans were also affected, with the cans exploding because of the heat.

An investigation into the cause of the fire has established that a machinery fault was to blame.
