Repairs are being carried out after a double decker bus ploughed into an overhead canopy in the grounds of a Sheffield hospital.

The bus, operated by Stagecoach, struck an overhead canopy at the main entrance to the Chesterman wing at the Northern General Hospital at around 10.45pm yesterday.

Five passengers were hurt, but their injuries were not deemed to be serious.

Nicole Wild, 32, from Ecclesfield, who was on the bus when it crashed, said passengers on the top deck were left trapped.

She said the front of the top deck was ‘sliced open’ and it was fortunate nobody was killed.

The mum-of-three said the driver was heard saying that he had taken a ‘wrong turn’ through the hospital grounds.

South Yorkshire Police said he had forgotten that he was driving a double decker.

In a statement released today,  Stagecoach South Yorkshire said: “We are investigating an incident in which a bus operating Service 2 came into contact with a canopy at the Chesterman Wing entrance to the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield last night.

“No-one was was reported to be seriously injured. However, safety is our absolute priority and we are working with the police to understand the full circumstances involved.”

The Northern General Hospital is open as normal today.

Repairs are being carried out to the damaged canopy, with the crash scene sealed off today, but patients are advised to attend appointments as normal.
