Repair the park dams

I am writing about the article in the Star, page 6, Friday, October 28, regarding the idea of turning Endcliffe Park into a floodplain. I can't understand this when the park already has a number of historical dams that gave water power to small steel works.

Could these be properly repaired, silt removed and the dams altered, allowing for flexibility in water levels to capture excess water in times of flood? Further up the river there is the same problem at Forge Dam where the water authority is wanting to build a new dam above the old one and the friends of Forge Dam are looking for funding to dredge the existing one! Why not kill two birds with one stone?
