Rent rise on horizon for housing tenants

NEW tenants in council homes across Sheffield could pay £3.74 a week extra in rent from next year under proposals out for consultation.

The city council is asking for people’s views on letting empty homes at a target rent - the same level that housing associations charge - from January 2013 to bring in extra cash for improvements.

The move would not affect current tenants staying in their properties as their rent gradually increases year on year until it meets the target, which is expected to be in 2015-16.

A drop-in session is being held to discuss the proposals tomorrow (Friday) at Howden House from 1.30pm to 4.30pm.
