Castle Galleries in Meadowhall Shopping Centre will be welcoming the sculptor on Saturday February 27, 1-4pm, who will present his most recent body of work ‘Light & Dark’, alongside signed limited editions from previous collections and original wall sculptures.

The latest collection of miniature scenes is Joly’s most emotionally charged to date, exploring the notion that life’s turmoils are as valuable as the happy times. The sculptures communicate strong themes surrounding modern society – in particular conscience, temptation and decadence. The tiny-sized art addresses these issues with a notably humorous tone; a signature style for which Joly has become renowned.

Originally, Joly started sculpting as a hobby, crafting the miniature characters out of clay, paper and wire to hide around his home for his children to find. In time, however, this passion escalated into a full time profession, which now sees him represent observations on life that are simultaneously mocking and truthful in nature. Each intricate figure is created by hand without a magnifying glass before being cast in bronze and painted.

Joly explains the inspiration behind his ‘Light and Dark’ series: “All of us are made up of emotions and experiences that cover light and dark, be they; happy, sad, beautiful, ugly, brave, scared, ashamed, proud. Dark times are as valuable as the happy times, without the dark there can be no light.

“This collection of work is the most personal I have ever put together. I have lifted the lid on the feelings, opinions, emotions, past experiences and thoughts that have been, and which are part of my life. From the battle with past addictions, to the joy and strength that my family give me, and all that lies between.”

Sam Rix, Gallery Manager for Meadowhall’s Castle Galleries – Washington Green Fine Art’s nationwide network of high street galleries – said: “We are extremely excited to welcome Nic to the gallery as one of the most innovative artists on today’s contemporary art scene.

“His highly collectable art tackles the enormity of life’s trials and tribulations on a miniature scale. Each piece is painstakingly created by Nic, who crafts every single figure himself ensuring the composition is perfectly balanced and tells the story he intended.”

Nic Joly will be presenting his new collection at Castle Galleries, Meadowhall, 3 Park Lane, Sheffield, S9 1EL on Saturday February 27. The exhibition will then run for a further week.
