Relive the wartime spirit at Kelham Island museum weekend

Step back in time to embrace the wartime spirit of the home front at this ever-popular weekend event.

Demonstrations include a weaponry and firing display by the Allied 39-45 Group and bomb disposal by Homefires Burning. The UK Homefront group are putting on Home Guard and ARP displays and a rest centre for bombed-out civilians, plus washday and make-do-and-mend demonstrations.

Vehicles on show including South Yorkshire Transport Museum’s 1937 Yorkshire Traction single-decker bus, a 1945 Diamond T tank transporter and the National Emergency Services Museum’s wartime fire engine, plus motorcycles, jeeps and classic cars.

Star Retro Club card holders get free admission to the Sunday afternoon tea dance, a saving of £2 (you still pay to get in to the museum).

The tea dance includes tea and cake. There’s optional dance tuition and the dancing takes place between 2pm and 4pm.

Headlining the music stage over the weekend will be UK no1 George Formby experience Paul Casper and Pete Jones, who will entertain with wartime classics. They are joined by vocalists Natasha Harper and Sheffield’s Susan St Nicholas, with her Vera Lynn tribute.

New for 2016, big band sounds will be provided by the Langsett Dance Orchestra on Saturday afternoon.

The vintage fair offers 20 antique, craft and vintage stalls.

The Little Mesters Café will provide a wartime menu including a hog roast and fish and chips,.

The event runs this Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 5pm.
