The region is ready to welcome the tour

The region is a hive of activity as the Tour De Yorkshire prepares to head our way on its all-important second leg this Saturday.

Doncaster will be an important milestone for the three-day event with men and women both facing the exact same route, which will include facing two sprint points at Scholes and Warmsworth, as well as three King and Queen of the Mountain climbs at Harewood Bank, East Rigton and Conisbrough Castle.

- For those feeling inspired by the cyclists zipping through the town, officers from South Yorkshire Safer Roads will be on hand in the Fan Zone to offer advice and information on how to best safely enjoy the open road on two wheels.

- Frenchgate Shopping Centre is also getting into the spirit of things after undergoing a Tour De Yorkshire themed makeover this week, complete with bunting, flags and plenty of bikes strategically placed throughout.

Frenchgate marketing manager Karen Staniforth said: “The whole Frenchgate team is honoured that the centre will be playing its part in the Tour de Yorkshire.

“All our stores are ready, especially the food outlets, and we are gearing up for a very busy day here when we will be open and very much business as usual – but with added bike-related fun and festivities!”

- Doncaster woman Helen Wallace is preparing to take on the challenge of a lifetime this weekend, by cycling the entire 81 miles of the second leg - despite not having ridden a bike since she was a child!

She will be cycling the route - considered challenging for even the most accomplished riders - with colleague Sonny Sethi, of Bawtry Eye Academy. The pair are raising money for charity Firefly, which provides free transport between Doncaster and Sheffield Weston Park Hospital for people undergoing cancer treatment.

- The latest Tour de France legacy project launched this week, with the opening of Yorkshire’s new community Bike Hubs.

The four new Hubs, including one in Doncaster, are funded by Sport England and delivered by Cycle Yorkshire, and aims to take a further step towards a county-wide cycling legacy for all generations and abilities.
