Region does not want a ‘Boris of the north’

Yorkshire needs its own assembly, not a ‘Boris of the north’ according to campaigners.

Supporters of the Yorkshire Devolution Movement, which has been lobbying to secure a directly-elected regional assembly for Yorkshire since it was formed in 2012, have written to council leaders and politicians asking for a serious debate over devolution of powers.

It comes following a call for from York Council for a Royal Commission.

Nigel Sollitt, YDM chairman, said: “Too often there is the familiar story of Yorkshire missing out on money and influence, so there is an acceptance that we need to do things differently.

“The YDM doesn’t want a Boris Johnson, London Mayor-type figure, but we do want a discussion and debate.”
