CALLS are being made for a busy Sheffield recycling centre to be opened seven days a week.

The site at Blackstock Road, Gleadless Valley, is currently open Fridays to Mondays under cuts to opening hours approved by ruling Labour councillors.

But opposition Lib Dem members of Sheffield Council have proposed a motion to Wednesday’s full council meeting calling on the authority to think again.

Coun Ian Auckland, who represents Graves Park and is proposing the motion, said: “Blackstock Road provides an essential service for people in the south and south-west of the city.

“It’s completely unacceptable that the Labour Council have treated these residents unfairly, denying them the service that they rightly expect. At the same-time, we’re seeing a rise in fly-tipping.”
