Recycling centre strikes are called off

AN INDEFINITE strike by Sheffield recycling centre workers which was set to begin the weekend before Christmas has been called off after talks via arbitration service ACAS.

Members of the GMB have been offered concessions by subcontractor SOVA, which operates the sites on behalf of Veolia and Sheffield Council.

Meanwhile, Veolia has revealed details of changes to waste and recycling services in Sheffield during Christmas and the new year.

Residents due to have a waste or recycling collection on either Christmas Day or New Year’s Day are advised that collections will take place on a different day during the festive period.

A spokeswoman for contractor Veolia said: “Black bins or blue bins and boxes scheduled for collection on Tuesday, December 25, will be collected on Saturday, December 22.

“Black bins or blue bins and boxes scheduled for collection on Tuesday, January 1, will be collected on Saturday, December 29.

“Collections will return to normal from Tuesday, January 8.”

All other household collections, including those on Boxing Day, will take place as normal, Veolia said.

Bins and boxes should be placed at the kerbside by 7am to ensure collection.

Over the festive period, Veolia says households must ensure bin lids close – but binmen will take extra waste between Christmas Eve and Friday, January 18, if it is bagged and placed next to black bins on collection day.

“Bundles of paper and cardboard will also be taken if tied neatly with string and placed at the side of your blue containers on collection day,” the spokeswoman said.

Sheffield’s household waste recycling centres will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
