Recognition for Sheffield Futures project

Sheffield Futures is proud to announce a project aimed at improving conditions and services for young people in Sheffield has been highly commended by the nationally recognised Children and Young People Now Awards 2015 and another project was shortlisted as a finalist.

In the Partnership Working Award category, our multi-agency project, lead by the Community Youth Teams (CYT) with the Accident and Emergency Department at the Northern General Hospital, Sheffield Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust was highly commended after becoming a national finalist. Each of the organisations involved offered their expertise and experiences to the ‘Pathway for Vulnerable Young People’ project that ensures all young people’s requirements are recognised. The project’s aim is to ensure that all 16 - 19 year olds who visit Accident and Emergency with additional needs are offered appropriate individual support that reduces their risk-taking behaviour. The pathway is shortly to be rolled out in the Accident and Emergency Department in the Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust.

Sheffield Futures Chief Executive Officer, Gail Gibbons said: “We are very proud that our ‘Pathway for Vulnerable Young People’ project has been highly commended at the Children and Young People Now Awards 2015. This is a tremendous achievement against extremely tough competition. This project is making a huge difference to young people with additional needs when they are visiting A&E. We are very proud of both multi-agency projects and the improvements that we have made for young people across Sheffield and South Yorkshire.”

The winners were announced at Children and Young People Now Awards on November 26th in London. West Community Youth Team Manager, Louise Ellison said: “It was great privilege to attend the Children and Young People Now Awards with colleagues from South Yorkshire Police, Multi Agency Support Team and Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust. It was a humbling experience to be surrounded by so many organisations that are dedicated to supporting young people, like Sheffield Futures. It is a real honour to be recognised for our partnership work and to receive a highly commended award.”

Community Youth Teams (CYT) were also shortlisted as finalists in the Youth Justice Award category for the ‘Vulnerability Project’ that was delivered by the Community Youth Team, Youth Justice Service, Multi Agency Support Team and South Yorkshire Police. The ‘Vulnerability Project’ prevents children and young people from being vulnerable to risk-taking behaviour, including exploitation and reduces the risk of trafficking both out of, and within, Sheffield and South Yorkshire. So far, 330 young people have engaged with the project, this has lead to an increase in referrals to specialist services including the Sheffield Sexual Exploitation Service.
