The Star covered the case of a Sheffield man with learning difficulties who was held as a slave and brutally beaten by members of a family who were jailed.
David Rooke, aged 44, was locked up for six years and six months, while his son Jamie, 19, was jailed for four years and Donna Rooke, 40, was sentenced to four months behind bars after they were found guilty of enslaving the victim in their garage and treating him as ‘their punchbag’
This is what you thought of them and their jail sentences.
Louise Hall: She’s no right to called a mother, they deserve all they get.
Brina Jayne L’Amie: Disgusting human beings
Amelia-Grace Cassiday: That’s horrendous
Patricia White: They are sick people
Shafqat Zaman: They should get the death penalty
Yasmein Green: shocked and disgusted at this, that poor man!
Daba Nazir: Absolutely evil. Why do people take advantage of the vulnerable especially young people with learning difficulties. Poor lad my heart goes out to him. The sentence is not enough...
Paul Mushta Andrew Milne: Look at her she should be ashamed of herself ............bet she’s got the brass nerve to show her face after she’s done time, nasty woman
There are plans to introduce a 60mph speed limit on the M1 in South Yorkshire.
You aren’t keen on the idea and you let us know on our Facebook page.
Andy Coldwell: I bet they fit a few new speed cameras to enforce it too, kerchingggg ££££
Dan Douglas: They’d only make money from those breaking the law. It’s like an opt-in tax, with the benefit that incompetent drivers will eventually be banned.
Jason Griffiths: If they’re going to do that the motorway needs an extra lane adding at J34 for Meadowhall as sometimes you end up having to accelerate over 60mph to get out of the filter lane when joining from j33 northbound.
Paul White: Since the roadworks started and the 50mph limit I have actually got where I am going quicker with less hold ups and my mpg has increased too! BONUS!
Matthew Stanley: Stupid.
David Graham: The M1 between the Tinsley viaduct and junction 29 has the most accidents......the viaduct bottleneck doesn’t help or Meadowhall shoppers or the joining of the M18 and the Parkway. It’s a very congested ,busy part of the M1.
Quality of life
With a series of shocking murders in 2013, the Parson Cross slavery story, a blind man being targeted by vandals and more police time being spent on dealing with binge drinkers we asked: Is the quality of life in Sheffield - ‘the safest city in Britain’ under threat?
Or are these isolated incidents that give our city a bad name when they’re publicised by the media? This is what you said:
Garet Land: Cuts to local services leave vulnerable people more vulnerable. Unemployment leads to anti social behavior and binge drinking. Who’s to blame for this? look no further that those scavengers banks and big business who avoid paying tax and speculate our money on the stock market whilst our services for the vulnerable are cut leaving Sheffield and our communities a more dangerous place to live.
Jamie Dawkins: I’d say all the incidents (apart from the slavery one, that’s nasty) are fairly typical of a large UK city. Whether they’re on the increase, I couldn’t say.
Mick Ibbotson: Seems to be a lot of these isolated incidents
Simon Bell: When I read about Kevin’s plight, it put me off my dinner. The scumbags who target him are in need of a bloody good hiding.
Sarah Ann Corbridge: The writing is on the wall!!
