Re-vamped art gallery in Barnsley to be relaunched

The Cooper Gallery in Barnsley is to be re-launched following a £638,000 re-vamp.

A family event is planned on Saturday, June 11 to celebrate the transformation thanks to Heritage Lottery Fund cash.

Transformed galleries and a new open space will be open to the public.

Art collections will also be on display, with masterpieces by artists including Thomas Girtin, John Ruskin, JMW Turner, Eugene Isabey, Henry Moore, Paul Nash, Jacob Kramer and Vanessa Bell to be on display.

Coun. Roy Miller, a Barnsley Council cabinet member, said: “The Cooper Gallery has undergone a major transformation over the last 12 months. The new interior and external space will be a great place for people to enjoy art, changing exhibitions, family activities, shopping and food in a relaxing atmosphere.

“I am sure people will want to come along to the launch event and take a look at the wonderful things the gallery has to offer.”

Paul Elmhirst, a Cooper Gallery trustee, said: “A lot of hard work and determination has gone into the transformation of the historic Cooper Gallery. I am sure people will agree that the gallery space has been greatly improved.”
