Daniel Frost, aged 33, of Glebe Road, Thorne, broke in to the home where the victim was staying on February 24 last year after hearing there was cannabis inside.

Richard Woolfall, prosecuting, told Sheffield Crown Court, the victim was aware cannabis was in the house – which belonged to her long-term partner – but she had no involvement.

He said: “Her partner had gone to work early and she was left alone in the house. The room which she was sleeping in had frosted glass in it.

“At around 7.30am she saw somebody on the other side of the door, she thought it was her partner.

“Then she saw a face pressed up against the glass, she did not know who it was.”

The man, who was the defendant, then entered the room carrying a crow bar, which he put down next to the bed.

Frost demanded to know who she was and why there was not more cannabis.

He took £40 from her handbag before trying to pull the bed covers off her.

Mr Woolfall added: “She told him to get off her, but after a couple of times she gave up because, in her words, she did not want her head caved in with the crow bar.”

Following the rape, Frost asked her for more money and when she said she did not have any he hit her in the face.

Frost then noticed she was wearing rings and demanded she took them off.

Mr Woolfall said: “She told them they were just cheap rings, but he wanted them anyway.

“In a panic, she struggled to get them off and he told her she had three seconds to get them off before he hit her over the head with the crow bar. Luckily she got them off.”

The defendant also ripped a silver chain necklace, worth around £20, from her neck.

A second man, who had been downstairs, then called to Frost they had been too long and had to leave.

Once she was sure the pair had left the house, the victim got dressed and went to her partner’s father’s house for help. The police were then called.

In a victim impact statement read to the court, the victim said she had been left feeling ‘violated and dirty’. She added she now felt ‘trapped in her own life’.

A laptop, an iPhone, an Xbox games console and a perfume and aftershave gift set were also taken in the robbery.

Mr Gordon Stables, mitigating, said: “The defendant knows there is no excuse for what he did, but he is now trying to make things right.

“He has had some terrible experiences in his life and he is now receiving counselling to help with that. He is also helping the police.

“This gives me hope that the defendant will not remain the damaged man he clearly is and has been.”

Frost, who had previously pleaded guilty to rape and robbery, appeared distressed throughout the hearing.

Sentencing Frost, Julian Goose QC, told Frost had defiled his victim and taken some of her personality. He also praised the ‘brave’ victim, who attended court along with several members of her family.
