Residents took to social media after the incident at 3.10pm yesterday afternoon.

One post yesterday read: "Anyone know why an aircraft coming in to Doncaster airport at about 3.10 this afternoon appeared to be 'accompanied ' by an RAF Typhoon fighter. The fighter kept circling until the aircraft had landed before flying off, presumably back to RAF Conningsby.

But bosses at Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield confirmed it was just a training exercise.

The sighting comes just over a month since residents were rocked by a sonic boom, created by two of the RAF's Typhoon fighter jets going supersonic in the skies above South Yorkshire.on May 2.

The aircraft were scrambled from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire to escort a wayward Air France airliner which had failed to maintain the necessary contact en route from Paris to Newcastle Airport.

As the jets raced to intercept the "unresponsive civilian aircraft," houses across Doncaster shook, people were woken and car alarms set off as the deafening booms rumbled through the skies.
