Set in the 1980s, the six-part series – which aired last the summer – charted the early years of Ann Summers through the prism of four women who find fulfilment from selling lingerie and sex toys to customers from their own homes.

Woodfield Road in Crookes and Sharrow Vale Road, Sharrow, were among several locations used for filming early last year.

The series – which starred Penelope Wilton, Sharon Rooney, Angela Griffin, Sophie Rundle and Chloe Pirrie – was written by Oriane Messina and Fay Rusling who took to Twitter to break the news.

They said: "Thanks to the five million who spent their six week summer holiday with Brief Encounters. Sadly, we won't be holidaying together next year."

In a statement, ITV said the channel had "taken the difficult decision not to recommission Brief Encounter" as it was seeking to "refresh" its drama portfolio.
