Racing preview for Wednesday, June 22

Salisbury and Carlisle serve up a veritable feast of midweek action with Combative taken to defy his relative inexperience with victory in the feature Whitsbury Manor Stud Bibury Cup at the first-named venue.

Trained by Amanda Perrett, this son of Sinndar hails from the family of Reams Of Verse and Elmaamul and has only had two starts to date, kicking off with an authoritative victory on the Lingfield all-weather in April.

The form of that maiden has not worked out brilliantly, but Combative could do little more than win with something in hand and his starting handicap mark of 89 suggests the handicapper was reasonably impressed.

However, he was unable to make his presence felt at Sandown on his handicap bow, with a slow early gallop over 10 furlongs hardly playing into the hands of what appears to be a horse who will stay further.

The winner, Primitivo, has since enhanced the form with victory in the King George V Stakes and with a switch up to a mile and a half now brought into play, Combative is taken to make the most of a 2lb drop in his rating.

Storm Ahead similarly showed up well behind a Royal Ascot winner at Doncaster and is one to watch in the Molson Coors Handicap.

The three-year-old struck gold at the third time of asking for Marcus Tregoning last year, finally getting his head in front in a Lingfield maiden in December.

Tregoning’s horses were not quite firing early in the campaign, which explains why Storm Ahead did not return until lining up at Doncaster earlier this month, when he bumped into Britannia hero Defrocked.

Much like at Ascot, Defrocked drifted across the track on Town Moor with Storm Ahead one of those who found his run compromised by the winner.

It is hard to say how much closer he would have been but Storm Ahead is expected to improve plenty for that outing.
