Race fears after BMX thefts

Staff running a Doncaster BMX club have been left '˜sickened' after raiders broke into their premises and made off with a fleet of bikes.

Containers belonging to the Doncaster BMX Club, based at Balby Carr Community Academy, were broken into between Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning and 12 Tractor BMX bikes were stolen.

Cash and equipment including whammy boards and compressors were also taken during the raid.

The DMBX club’s leaders say they are worried the theft means they will be unable to hold a regional British Cycling meet, which usually attracts between 400-500 riders.

Club secretary Joanne Wood said: “We’ve worked really hard over the last six years to put this club together, and now we’ve got national and international class riders.

The 41-year-old added: “But that’s all been taken away from us now because of what they’ve done.

“We’re all feeling pretty disgusted and sickened by what’s happened to be honest.

“Without equipment like the compressor we can’t put on the regional competition, which is a big deal for the club and to all of the riders who are supposed to be coming.

“We’re appealing to anyone who knows anything about the theft to get in touch with the police.

“And if any Doncaster businesses could donate any equipment or help with sponsorship we’d really appreciate that. Please call me on 07951 278438 if you can help the club out.”

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Officers are investigating after a number of bikes were stolen from a school in Balby.

“Sometime between 9.30pm on Tuesday 5 April and 7am the following morning, offenders gained access to the storage containers in Balby Carr Community Academy in Weston Road.

“A total of 12 Tractor BMX bikes are believed to have been taken as well as a quantity of cash and several power tools.

“Police investigating the matter are appealing for your help to find those responsible.
