Quitting Facebook, getting rid of ‘unsuitable’ friends and buying a dog are among the best ways to save a failing relationship, according to a Sheffield firm of solicitors.

Irwin Mitchell questioned 2,000 Brits about their love lives, which revealed Sheffield couples spent the longest time apart during rocky patches – splitting for 11 weeks compared to a national average of eight.

Martin Loxley, a specialist family lawyer said: “Most relationships will go through a rocky period at some stage, and it seems the way you deal with things during that time can be the difference between patching things up or splitting permanently.”
