Quest for sun proves a record-breaker

SPAIN and Poland were the favourite destinations for passengers flying out of Doncaster over the weekend.

Robin Hood Airport had predicted they would break passenger records for an August Bank Holiday, the third since it opened in April 2005.

Britain’s poor summer persuaded many South Yorkshire people to head to the Mediterranean for some guaranteed sunshine although the weather at home turned out better than most Bank Holidays.

Flights to Polish destinations were also popular with the growing number of Poles working in Doncaster who were heading home for a weekend with their families.

Steve Adamson, communications manager for Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield, said: “We were gearing up for one of the busiest weekends of the year, and certainly this is set to be the busiest August bank holiday.

“Some of the most popular routes operating to and from the Airport this weekend are Katowice, Malaga, Dublin, Gdansk, Girona and Belfast City.

Spain is a growing market for Robin Hood Airport, at this peak time, more than 25 flights a week operate to and from Spain alone.”

Next year is predicted to be another record breaker with eight more charter flight destinations due to be up and running by summer 2008.
