Queen's Awards for nine elite South Yorkshire firms

Nine '˜outstanding' South Yorkshire companies have received a Queen's Award for Enterprise, the UK's highest business honour.

This year, 230 firms have been recognised nationally for their contribution to international trade, innovation, sustainable development and promoting opportunity through social mobility.

Queen’s Awards are made annually to coincide with Her Majesty’s birthday on April 21.

ANCON - Innovation

Sheffield based Ancon has been recognised with a joint award with MagmaTech Ltd for developing the Teplo range of basalt-fibre low thermal conductivity wall ties, designed to meet the requirements of super-insulated houses.

CENTRAL WIRE - International Trade

Central Wire’s international strategy focuses on difficult to produce, higher added value products, exporting to 30 countries.

Overseas sales have grown 93 per cent over the last three years and the proportion of sales exported has increased to 64 per cent of total sales.

GREEN ORIGINS - International Trade

The company also won a Queen’s Award in 2016. It is an importer, wholesaler, exporter and retailer of organic superfoods such as wheatgrass powder, chia seeds and cocoa powder, selling them under its own brands.

Overseas sales have grown by 86.6 per cent during the three year period and now account for over 40 per cent of total sales.

MANVERS ENGINEERING - Innovation

The firm developed a novel spill containment system for the construction industry - a ‘nappy’ placed under machinery to protect the ground from contamination. The product absorbs and holds a leak, whilst filtering water out.

OSSILA - International Trade

Ossila makes materials and architectures to provide standardised prototyping platforms to support researchers working on next-generation solar cells. In the last six years annual overseas sales have risen from £158,000 to £911,000 an overall growth of 476 per cent.

SAMUEL GRANT - Innovation

The firm developed a “wrapping-as-a-service,” called Samson Nano, in which customers pay to have a pallet wrapped. It includes the cost of internet-connected equipment and materials.

SBD APPAREL - International Trade

SBD makes supports for strength sports including the World’s Strongest Man competition. Overseas sales have grown by 184 per cent over the last three years and over 80 per cent of sales are exported.

TRANSDEK - Innovation

Transdek won for a double-deck trailer which allows up to 25 per cent extra useable payload.

TWINKL - International Trade

Twinkl publishes educational resources online, selling to 247 countries. Exports have grown 600 per cent in three years.
