Members of Sheffield Business Improvement District, or Bid, were formally presented with the accreditation this month, qualifying them for Purple Flag status for another year.

The national scheme is similar to the Blue Flag award for beaches, and aims to raise the standard and broaden the appeal of town and city centres between 5pm and 5am.

Sergeant Matthew Burdett, who leads the Purple Flag accreditation process for the city, said: “The assessors came to see us in December and they were impressed with what they saw. They said Sheffield was an excellent example of close partnership working.

“All the organisations and volunteers involved put a great deal of time and effort into making Sheffield a great place to be both day and night and this has resulted in the prestigious status yet again.

"Thanks to everyone who helped us keep the flag flying.”

Areas awarded the Purple Flag are recognised for providing a vibrant and diverse mix of dining, entertainment and culture while promoting the safety and wellbeing of visitors and local residents.

Sheffield Council's cabinet member for culture, sport and leisure Mary Lea said: “It’s great to see Sheffield receiving this award, and our night-time entertainment offer being recognised on a national level.

“With our varied selection of bars and restaurants, as well as a thriving theatre district and huge array of cultural attractions, we in Sheffield really are leading the way when it comes to providing an eclectic mix of places to eat, drink, relax and have fun.

“I hope that Sheffield city centre will continue to go from strength to strength, with the imminent opening of the new Light leisure and entertainment complex (on The Moor) and the creation of the New Retail Quarter.”
