Pupils delve in to history to create new street names

Children from a school in Kirk Sandall, in Doncaster, have been given the chance to make their mark on the town’s history, by local housebuilder Albemarle Homes.

Four pupils, all aged eight and nine from Kirk Sandall Junior School won a competition to name the streets in a new homes development, within the Doncaster suburb.

All children in year four were given the task to research local history close to where Grove Farm is currently being built. They discovered the close connection with the renowned Pilkington family and derived their inspiration from there and the surrounding area.

Pilkington Road was chosen as a perfect road name leading into Grove Farm, while Old School Drive and Silica Court were chosen for street names within the development.

“We think all the ideas were great and offer our thanks and congratulations to Ella, Riley, Harvey and Rhys for creating names with such a relevance to the local area,” said Darryl Barker, Managing Director of Albemarle Homes.

“It’s great for these local children to know that they have played an important part in shaping the history of the place in which they live.”

Jayne McAllister, headteacher at Kirk Sandall Junior School said: “We are really pleased that Ella, Riley, Harvey and Rhys won the competition, it’s a great testament to the hard work and enthusiasm they have shown to this project. It will also be a great story to tell their grandchildren and even show them the little piece of history they helped to create!”

Building has now begun at Grove Farm, in its canal side location near St Oswald’s Church. Once complete, the exclusive development will comprise 94 two, three and four bed homes, those currently available range from £139,950 for a two bedroom home, from £169,950 for a three bedroom semi, and from £175,950 for a three bed detached.

Selected purchase initiatives are available including the government lead initiative Help to Buy, which offers assistance for buyers who only have a small deposit of around 5%, for example £6,998 based on the current two bed price, through the provision of a 20% equity loan from the Government for those who meet the qualifying criteria. This means buyers only need to secure up to a 75% mortgage from a bank or building society.
