Pubs and restaurants could re-open in just two weeks, according to reports

Bars could be back in business by as early as JUne 22 – almost two weeks ahead of the previously announced date, reports the FInancial Times.

Ministers are reportedly working to allow some pubs and restaurants to begin operating again, serving drinks outdoors.

It's in a bid to save the hospitality industry, with industry chiefs warning that 3.5 million jobs could be on the line if the government does not act quickly.

Pubs, bars and restaurants were not scheduled to open again until at least July 4, though many have remained open for takeaway and delivery throughout the UK's lockdown.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak is reported to be among the half-a-dozen ministers hoping to get the industry open by June 22, according to the FT.

The new date has reportedly been confirmed by several senior Whitehall officials.

The group of ministers aiming to fast-track the industry reopening are calling themselves the 'Save Summer Six'.

Sunak is said to be in favour of opening pubs sooner than the previous July date, utilising beer gardens, marquees and terraces to maintain social distancing.

There have been calls to reduce the 2m social distancing rule which many said would allow pubs and restaurants to operate more normally.

All pubs, restaurants and cafes have been shut since March 23 when Boris Johnson announced the start of lockdown.
