Public to have say on plans to close children’s centres in Rotherham

Have your say

Parents have two months to comment on plans to close children’s centres across Rotherham.

Plans have been drawn up to reduce the number of council-run centres from 22 to seven to save money.

A series of public meetings are to be held for residents to have their say.

The first is to be held at Rockingham Professional Development Centre, Roughwood Road, Kimberworth, at 6pm on Thursday for users of the Central, Kimberworth, Park View, Rockingham and Thorpe Hesley Children’s centres.

Council officers will outline the reasons for the closure programme – reducing the Early Years and Child Care Service by £2.2 million.

Coun Paul Lakin, cabinet member for children and young people’s services, said: “This has not been an easy decision and we do not want to take this action but I hope parents take time to attend the meetings and hear what is being proposed.

“Thanks to Government cuts, we simply have no option but to reduce the service.”
