The £5.4m Core of activity for Voluntary Action

THIS is the way Voluntary Action Barnsley's new £5.4 million headquarters will look when they open in the middle of next year.

Work has already started on The Core, an eco-friendly building which will feature thermal-insulation windows, solar control, a biomass boiler and an insulating roof garden. The Core is being built on the Courthouse Campus area off Regent Street, which already includes the Digital Media Centre and the Sci Tech Centre.

Voluntary Action Barnsley will move to the building from its three separate sites on Queens Road, providing support, advice and training for Barnsley-based community organisations.

There will also be a volunteers centre where people can find out about the range of opportunities available throughout the borough.

Voluntary Action Barnsley chief exec Dr Penny Stanley said: “It is exciting to see the construction work start. Our current facilities are beginning to restrict service delivery and are inhibiting our ambitious development plans.”

The building has been designed by Sheffield-based Bond Bryan Architects.
